WATCH: Grammie & Papa (VIDEO)

Video uploaded to YouTube by alissakoenig.

In February of 2010, at the age of 89, my Grammie was diagnosed with Guillain Barre syndrome, leaving her completely paralyzed. She was in “twilight” and on a breathing machine. Then came the long process of all of her nerves recovering and the need for her to relearn everything, then physical therapy… Through it all my Papa was faithfully by her side (as he has been for over 68 years), with the help of my father and aunts. It was during this time that I became engaged, and when it was finally okayed for me to visit her she couldn’t move and could barely speak, but she said to me, “I will be dancing at your wedding.” And here she is, 8 months later, dancing at my wedding.

The next morning a woke up with the same symptoms. This raised concerns with me and I was off to the doctor.

Being diagnose with a viral infection and medication in hand, I felt that soon I will be back to my normal self. Continue reading

Share YOUR story!

I’ve recently been posting inspirational stories of Guillain-Barre Syndrome survivors from around the world. With a southern African twist to this site, I’d love to share YOUR stories of recovery. If you feel you have the power and strength to write to me about your experiences to post on this site, please do so to evanrothman@gmail.com. The story may be as long or as short as you wish it to be. I’ll post a brief story of my experience with GBS in the next week to hopefully motivate you to put your thoughts to paper.

Keep strong, friends!
